Castor's Grassroots Momentum Surges With MoveOn.Org Endorsement
- Castor Received More Nominations Than Any Other Candidate for U.S. Senate -
TAMPA - U.S. Senate candidate Betty Castor received a major boost in her grassroots campaign today as Moveon.org endorsed her for U.S. Senate. MoveOn.org is one of the most effective and responsive organizations for participation in grassroots politics today. They have over 2,000,000 members in Florida and across the country
"I am honored to receive the endorsement of MoveOn.org," said Castor. "They have engaged millions of voters on the internet and my campaign will benefit from having their support."
"There is no question that Florida will again play a starring role in the 2004 election," wrote Eli Pariser of Moveon.org in an email to its members. "That's part of why MoveOn members have overwhelmingly endorsed Betty Castor, who's running to be the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Florida. Betty is the best candidate to turn out the vote for Kerry in Florida, and she'll be a terrific Senator for Florida."
The former president of the University of South Florida has focused on grassroots efforts throughout the campaign, and has already received the endorsement of 10 of 15 active chapters of Florida Democracy for America. Democracy for America, a grassroots organization started by Howard Dean after his run for the Democratic Presidential nomination, encourages more local participation in national elections.
In an email, Terry, a MoveOn member from Miami, wrote, "I have known Betty Castor for more than 20 years. As a state Senator Betty was always there on the issues that matter to me. I know that Betty Castor will be a voice of reason and compassion in the U.S. Senate."
Castor continues to lead in the Democratic primary by double-digit margins and is the strongest Democrat against every Republican in the general election. Castor has also received the endorsement of the Miami Herald, St. Petersburg Times, Palm Beach Post, and the Jewish Journal.
"These endorsements are all very promising," said Castor. "But this election is not over and I am not taking anything for granted."
